Special Notice to Teams Playing at Queensboro Oval

Because of a decision by the Parks Department favoring tennis over other team sports, 2012 spring softball cannot be played in Queensboro Oval until mid-June. This will require YSA to move games originally scheduled at the Oval to other locations throughout the city. As your league organizer we are working tirelessly to prevent this from happening.

Special Notice to All YSA Teams

Parks Plans Fewer Games in Manhattan — More Games on Randall's Island

We are fighting to stop the closure of open space and the continued reduction of midtown fields. The Parks Department wants less softball in Manhattan and more teams and leagues to play at Randalls Island. Please join us in fighting the loss of the fields at Queensboro Oval. A strong voice of opposition to the parks department strategy is our best tool in the fight to preserve access to Manhattan fields for all sports!

Take Action

We have an opportunity to get our ball field back, but we need your support. Please help us, the Queensboro community and your fellow league players by signing our online petition. It will be delivered by snail mail and email to the Parks Department by May 15, 2012.

Background Information

The Parks Department has reneged on its commitment to Community Board 8 with regard to Queensboro Oval. In 2010 the board rightfully rejected the Parks Department’s plan to have year-round tennis bubbles in the park. Sutton Tennis East, a commercial operation which charges substantial fees for use of its tennis facilities, has leased the park during the “off season.”
The Parks Department is now allowing tennis through June 15. Besides being an unwarranted intrusion on the rights of the non-tennis playing public, this represents a significant interference with league play since a significant portion of the season has been eliminated. Through the allocation of fields, the Parks Department is squeezing out traditional league sports like softball and touch football, which have provided countless hours of outdoor fun for generations of New Yorkers.
